Some indie games looked okay in this contest. Most did not. Hotline Miami was one of the many, many games that looked like gutter trash. The game actually is gutter trash, too. I played a bunch of it over a buddy's house, and it's a wonderful example of how a great soundtrack does not a good game make. Thankfully, Dark Souls took out the trash.
More than a few people banked on the Souls games being very strong this contest and overperforming their 2015 values, in large part because the words "game of the decade" might really matter to the voters. Two things dominated gaming in the 2010s -- open worlds, and Dark Souls. By the time Dark Souls made its round 1 appearance this contest, we already knew it would boost. Bloodborne, Dark Souls 3, and Nioh all outperformed expectations. Only Sekiro looked "off", and that's easily explained. People thought it was too hard, because they suck at video games and don't know what they're doing in Sekiro.
When Dark Souls finally stepped on the stage in this contest, it was very clear the flagship of that genre was ready to destroy. Regardless of opponent, 83% is an awesome result. As someone who absolutely loves Dark Souls and wanted to see Hotline Miami suffer, I couldn't have been happier over this one. I felt like a proud papa watching his kid hit the winning home run or something. I've wanted to see Dark Souls slay a contest for a long time, and I was finally getting it.
And yes, I picked Last of Us to beat this game. Not because of 2015 x-stats or whatever, but because I thought it would get a similar boost for similar reasons, not to mention Last of Us 2 hype mid-contest.
"Whoops."
Ctes's Analysis[]
Dark Souls was one of the most anticipated games to watch in the contest. Last contest, it was already good enough to make round 3 by upsetting Metal Gear Solid V. This contested, it was expected to do better. You can’t talk about Game of the Decade without Dark Souls being brought up. The Soulsborne games have been a huge part of this decade and they’ve been growing in popularity in the latter half the decade as well. Dark Souls has been very influential and has gained a lot of respect, a lot of which comes from the fact that it’s a hard game that came out in a time where the surge in mobile games made console games easier to complete or at least gave you the possibility of getting through on easy mode. You needed players to not give up and spent hours doing nothing on their new smartphone. Dark Souls however appealed to gamers building a reputation of the game being hard and it was successful enough for casuals to buy into it to. It’s a bit stupid, but it worked. I’m sure lots of kids today would name a Soulsborne game as the hardest thing ever and it’s not that bad, not even for its time, but word of mouth did this game huge favors.
Of course, Dark Souls would’ve have become that big if being hard was the only thing it had going for it. It’s a great game. Some people were taking it to beat Skyrim and a few took it to the finals. Others however looked at its 2015 stat and figured it already had its peak strength then, which would put it below The Last of Us, causing The Last of Us winning the division to be a very popular upset pick. Dark Souls proved itself today, however, adding yet another blowout to the long list this year. It was in this and we could not count it out of a long run yet.
Hotline Miami is from the early part of the decade, but it has had releases in the latter half too. It was released on Switch a year ago and it was released on Xbox One on the day of this match. I bet you didn’t know, but it’s true, though only if you’re American, otherwise it would be past midnight and be the following day, but at the start of the match it was on release day. It probably didn’t help the game in the slightest and that’s confirmation that you aren’t really worth much, so as much as this looks good for Dark Souls, it was still not really possible to tell what it meant.
Safer777's Analysis[]
Dark Souls is the Dark Souls of videogames! Okay I jest. But DS when it came out it made the get good meme famous. It is a hard game. Like real hard. You know one of these games that apparently people now don't care because they have the gatcha games/MMO's/Casual games? Yeah things don't work like this. People always want something different. Sure hard games like DS aren't for everyone but for people that like stuff like that it is excellent. Plus we all know some challenge in our games right? Well these games offer a LOT of challenge and that is a good thing. Plus after the great success of DS so many clones followed. As for HM...another indie game that I don't know anything about it. Yeah sorry once again. I do believe it is fairly popular and a lot of copycats followed it though.
So for the match. Obviously DS trashed HM easily. Duh. The only real question is how much would score. And I do believe it scored excellent. I mean almost 83% is amazing no matter what game does that against what game. Also I do believe from the 3 DS games the first one is considered the best strangely enough. Well that is.

Dark Souls became the fourth game this contest to break 20000 votes, though it was the first of those to give up at least 4000. We knew Dark Souls was going to be strong, so if anything, this is a good performance by Hotline Miami. Nothing to worry about, though; the next match was going to produce a weak opponent for it no matter what happened.
