After how good Cuphead looked in round one, compared to how "off" Grand Theft Auto always looks, plus with this match being in the group of matches to take place directly after a developer rally for Shovel Knight, hype for THE CUPSET!!! was through the roof. A lot of people figured Cuphead would win the board vote plus get help from rally spillover, which could potentially create one of the all-time funniest matches ever, or at least one of the funniest freezes.

All that hope got dreamcrushed in a matter of minutes. There was only a very small board vote win for Cuphead, and after the first couple minutes were over, Grand Theft Auto 5 dominated this matchup. GTA5 had 54% at the freeze. It won with 60% of the vote. That's a pretty good rise on a site where any win for Grand Theft Auto feels like running in mud, but it's worth noting that for all of the struggles GTA has around here, Grand Theft Auto 5 feels like the one game in that series with real strength behind it. It's easily the strongest GTA game on this site, and though it lost to Super Mario RPG in 2015, it scored 43% against a game that made the semifinals that year. GTA5 is clearly legit on this site, and a cut above the rest of the GTA games here.

I don't think was Cuphead, or indies in general, crapping the bed here. GTA5 just picked a good time to give us arguably its best match ever. Shout out to Leon4 for this stat -- did you guys know that GTA5 winning this match meant that this was Grand Theft Auto's first appearance in round 3 of a contest since Tommy Vercetti beat Donkey Kong all the way back in 2003? It's true. Look it up. I couldn't believe it either.

I don't like GTA games much at all, but I do enjoy when long droughts end. Props to the series for finally getting to hang with the big boys! And given this performance, maybe it was finally safe to take Grand Theft Auto seriously on GameFAQs, and maybe it could finally win a division. After all, its next match was going to be against a Vita game or Grand Theft Cowboy, so its ticket to the divisional finals was a lock. What could possibly go wrong?

Ctes's Analysis[]

Cuphead winning this match was a tempting upset to many before the contest, although not many actually ended up taking it. It doesn’t look very good now, because it didn’t even come close. It was another slap in the face to indie games, but just as much a time to recognize that Grand Theft Auto V is probably pretty strong all things considered. It will never be as good here as it is anywhere else. All of our contest history backs that up, but it wont job to the first thing that has some strength as some people thought and more people feared.

After the first round, Grand Theft Auto V did look like the better game. Especially if you factor in any anti-votes it might have gotten. Considering its awful board vote, it probably has quite a few of those. Cuphead went neck to neck with it when the match began and still held its lead a minute in. GTAV would end up looking safe by the end of the freeze, but it was still only just above 54% at the freeze. It rose to heaven from there. There’s quite the difference. Indie games typically have very good board votes and that goes for Cuphead too, so the board vote was as funny as they get.

Cuphead failing to get 40% is a disappointment when you consider the chances we gave it, it never had, but that’s probably more on us than on it. It still looks to be a good contender for the best indie game in the bracket, although there’s a lot of weird results ahead of it. All of GTAV vs. P4G, P4G vs. Xenoblade, Ultimate vs. Xenoblade, BotW vs. Ultimate and BotW vs. Witcher are matches where you need to think once again if the result is natural or the case of some other factors. That’s every single match ahead of Cuphead! Two of those pretty clearly favor Cuphead, two of those pretty don’t and the final one is something we can’t agree on. It makes it as hard as it gets.

Cuphead looked really good in its Game of the Year polls, clearly indicating its on the high end of the indie rank, so the adjusted x-stats probably has it right. It got a ton of exposure and even a bit of Smash reference since then, so it makes sense to think it’s up there. It’s a shame it was seeded #8 so it would run straight into a #1 seed. Even in the weakest division, that was too much for it. It would’ve been cool to see it elsewhere. Imagine if it switched places with Super Meat Boy, going against Sonic Mania would be a neck to neck match.

Grand Theft Auto V looked really good today, and at the same time Persona 4 Golden only beat Red Read Redemption by a hair. Almost everyone expected GTAV to be the better of the two Rockstar games, so that made GTAV the favorite going into next round as it had been before the contest began, despite that we now knew Persona 4 Golden would be a Persona 4 proxy.

Safer777's Analysis[]

I don't know why but there was an indiefear with Cuphead. Sure it is an amazing indie game and very recognizable because of the art style but man we are talking about GTA 5 here. If GTA V was facing a middle tier Nintendo game then yeah sure, but against an indie? Not really. I mean the whole crew had GTA 5 under 55 too! Of course it won with more than 60.

So for the match. There was a fear as I said but GTA 5 managed to win easily. Indies aren't as strong as people say. I mean it is just a general thought but indies cover a myriad of genres and such so you can't just it is an indie game and that is. I mean even the biggest indie game of all time which is Minecraft didn't do much in the contest too. Also even though Shovel Knight seems to be the face of the Indies, Cuphead may be more popular! Strange but I do believe that is the truth. So yeah. GTA 5 seems to be weak on this site since we don't like good games ilike this it seems, but it just faced weak opponents. Or maybe we love GTA here? Of course not.

Tsunami's Analysis[]

GTA V continues to be casualbait, trailing only BotW and Witcher 3 (and Skyrim, but that hadn't had its match yet when I wrote this) in R2 prediction percentage. Cuphead's classic Disney aesthetic continues to perform well here, and while it never stood a chance of winning, this was a solid showing, more or less. It couldn't quite break 40%, though.
