Had this match happened in the early to mid 2000s, people may have cared about it. Now? It's the best bonus match we could come up with through Luster Soldier's polls, and even then we all knew Mario would win. Even with Mega Man X in the poll stealing votes from him. I know Crono may have also had votes leeched due to the SNES connection, but Mario would get hurt more than Crono in a poll like this.
And even then, it was never a contest. Mario/Crono is dead and is no longer a debate: Mario won. The end. It makes me wonder how Crono was able to pull off that one win in 2004, but that's an era long past.
This also makes me wonder how in the hell Mario managed to lose to Vivi. If you put Mega Man X in Mario's place, does Vivi still win? Hell, if you put Crono in Mario's place, does Vivi win? I doubt it. That upset was as goofy as it was awesome, but I'm not complaining. It would have also been nice to see Mega Man vs Mega Man X pre-Brawl U announcement, because I think Mega Man X could have won that poll. Now? No chance.
This ended round 2, and our bonus polls entirely until the end of the contest. It was a pretty interesting round, all things considered, but it could in no way prepare us for how nuts the rest of this contest would be. Round 3 and on of this contest was on par with the 2002 stretch of Samus > Sonic, Sephiroth > Mega Man, and Mario > Cloud back to back to back. I really believe that.
Here's another match where I wonder what the hell we were thinking. Why X in this match? Did we really need Mario vs Crono for a tenth time? Crono has dropped so much in the decade leading up to this match that this didn't even need to be a question. Even with X potentially sapping some of Mario's votes away he was still able to beat Crono quite comfortably. Could X beat Crono if Mario weren't here? Maybe. I seriously don't think Crono is going to be shit come CBX. I'd be shocked if he made it out of Round 3, even with a good seed. Put him up against a Pokemon and watch him crumble.
