How did Heavy Rain make this contest, but not Detroit: Become Human? Detroit is by far the best game Quantic Dream has done. There was a good discussion this year about which game in the bracket fell off the hardest since release, and Heavy Rain was mentioned the most. I like the game, but it's hard to disagree. That game was almost universally loved and discussed when it first came out, now it's.... pretty much the exact opposite. I'm surprised it even made this contest.
But Persona 5? Man is that game is a badass slayer these days. Remember when the Persona series would struggle to beat games like Dead Rising, Civilization 4, and Street Fighter 4? Yeah, those days are long, long behind us. This is a mainstream series now, and it has a case as being the strongest JRPG series on this web site now. No Final Fantasy game released this decade can touch the Persona franchise, and you have to go back to the 90s to find some FF games to match up.
With all of that said, in a vacuum this match was a standard 1-16 blowout. However, it showed that Persona 5 was a slight step below the strength it needed to hang with the big boys and make the final. This was a great performance, but it wasn't quite enough to prove it could beat the likes of Witcher 3, Skyrim, and Dark Souls. Remember, these round 1 matches were all about positioning for that second finals spot.
Ctes's Analysis[]
Persona 5 is one of the boards favorite games. If that’s wrong, then it just has the loudest fans. Board 8 was into Persona way before it was cool, and the fact that our baby has become as big as it has to the point of getting a #1 seed in anything seems to be more happiness than our minds can handle. Persona 5 was given one of the easier divisions, seemingly. Most people didn’t think there was an upset chance here, but almost everyone that went for an upset in the previous division took it past here as well, although everyone in this context isn’t that many people. Persona 5 had one of the simplest routes in the contest, most of us would agree.
Anything Persona 5 does that can be twisted into a good showing was taken as a good showing. Maybe I’m giving the stats topic or a couple of loud users too much credit here, but it’s the vibe you would get from reading the board on Persona 5 match days, and I’ve been defending the idea that Persona 5 is great but not fantastic in these contests a lot. That it never stood a chance of making it out of top 8, regardless of which of the top 4 it was allowed to face. Persona 5 finished second in the Game of the Year polls, winning the Playstation one and barely avoiding getting doubled by Breath of the Wild in the end in a 7-way poll. Severely SFF’d Super Mario Odyssey almost avoided that too in 10-way poll with two other Mario games that got almost no votes, yet the final poll seemed to be an indicator of too great things for Persona 5. Not that any of those polls should mean that much.
Now what would Persona 5 need to keep the hype up today? In the minds of some, probably just advancing would be enough. It was 0.08% away from the general consensus in the oracle, so it did as it should almost as much as you possibly could I suppose. That should keep all hope up. Heavy Rain was never that big and it’s mostly a joke these days, I’m afraid. I’ll defend the game and say that I enjoyed it a lot, but I haven’t played it in 10 years, which might be good for what I think of it.

Persona is damn popular here even though their characters do damn bad in these contests. Actually the Persona games do bad though. All Persona games do extremely well with critics and fans but not that good in sales. But Persona 5 changed this. It did damn well in sales, it broke records actually. Plus Joker got even in Smash as a main character! Damn! Also the Persona 5 cast appears in many spin off games. Strange but yeah. In fact a Persona Warriors spin off will come out sooon. I shall buy it since I am a huge Warriors fan and a Persona fan too. As for the HR game it is like an adventure/visual novel kinda style game? Look it is strange. It is known nowadays for the memes though. Hey at least it is widely known unlike some games in this contest.
So for the match. Well P5 won easily. I mean as I said HR is known even though for wrong reasons but still. P4 did really good a few days ago too. P5 did 0.5% better than P4 too! So nothing else to say. Persona series off to a good start. Finally they are doing good!

So of course, as I so frequently do, I immediately followed up my colossal blunder with an outright win. Only went over by 0.02%, and unlike some of my previous wins where I just had the high/low pick on a match we all messed up, there was some tight competition. In fact, the Oracle consensus was only 0.08% off from what actually happened--the top scores were the ones closest to the median!
Also, despite having literally filled out a bracket, it was at the very least when I was making Oracle predictions and possibly even on the match day itself when I went "wait, how is Heavy Rain in this contest? Didn't that game come out in like 2008 or something?" Nope, but I understand my confusion. Exact years for things in the past often elude me, so I probably remembered seeing ads for it on TV in my college dorm room and figured "yeah, that's late 2000s"; it actually came out in February of 2010 for the Playstation 3. It was then ported to the PS4 in 2016...and to Windows in 2019. So, yeah, recent rerelease, makes sense that it somehow managed to squeak out a bid. Got crushed, of course, because Persona is mainstream now even if SMT as a whole still isn't.
