I saw Sonic Mania getting made fun of a lot for eating a turbo blowout in the late rounds, which is just grossly unfair to Persona 5 here. I don't think people quite understand just how crazy strong the Persona series has gotten on this web site, or how rabid that fanbase is. If you skip ahead and look at KP's adjusted stats (https://pastebin.com/Pxt3zA8g), he has the game right at the strength of Dark Souls, and we can all agree Dark Souls made a big leap from 2015 to now.
The Persona series has made a much, much bigger leap. I'm going to keep posting this poll to hammer this point home: https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/poll/4154-southwest-division-round-2-dead-rising-vs-persona-4
Pretend that poll happened in this contest, and it was Dead Rising 2 versus Persona 4 Golden. My over-under on the oracle consensus would be Persona 4 with 60-65% of the vote. Maybe higher.
This wasn't some LOL SONIC match. This was all Persona flexing some newfound muscle. This contest had a series cap of 2 games. For those playing the home game, only one series in this contest got both of its games into the final 16 -- Persona. It was an eyelash from getting both games into the final 8, too. Persona in this contest accomplished what no other series could. Not Zelda, not Mario, not Dark Souls, none of it.
RESPEK THE NAME.

Ctes's Analysis[]
It was perfectly clear after this match what an awfully weak four-pack Sonic Mania came out of. The game clearly didn’t belong in round 3. It did however serve the purpose of giving people hope that Persona 5 stood a chance to reach the semi-finals, which gave us some more fun in the latter half of the contest. Persona 5 had just the right opponents to look better than it possibly was in round 2 and 3 and it was second place in our GotY polls in 2017 on top of that, where everything looked to be stronger than expected. If its match in the division finals were ever in doubt, it definitely wasn’t any longer.
Sonic Mania feels weird, honestly. If it wasn’t a Sonic game, I’m sure a lot of people would praise it a good bit more. It’s a pretty fun game. I like to think of it is an equivalent to if Super Mario’s only good games post the 90s were New Super Mario Bros games. They’d be enjoyed, but Mario overall wouldn’t be the same because the newer games had nothing on the classic ones. Sonic Mania is probably stronger due to its name than it would have been without it. It would need to drop a lot to not reach this point, but I’m sure it performed better because of Sonic still has an iconic status. I think it’s funny to think of what games our Noble Nine comes from and see where they are today, obviously not counting Smash Bros which features seven of them. A lot of them haven’t kept up the level, in fact only two of them has games as good as ever, but unlike most others, Sonic actually had a better Game of the Decade than the previous one where only Sonic Adventure 2 got in and somehow managed to lose to lose to Street Fighter IV. So hey, Sonic actually moves forward!

This match was pretty easy to predict. Sonic Mania is one of the weakest games to reach Round 3. And Persona series is super legit now as I have said multiple times plus the enhanced version of Persona 5 recently came out, the main character got into Smash, we will have a spin off P5 game too so P5 is still very revelant. So yeah Sonic Mania was lucky to reach that far. Hey at least a Sonic game reached this far!
So for the match. So everyone had Persona 5 winning with at least a doubling and guess what. It won with barely a doubling so all are as expected. Also we have 2 Persona games out of 2 Persona games in this contest to reach division finals! The only series to do that in the contest! Not Zelda, not Mario! Damn who could have expected that a few years ago? I still remember in the previous contest 2 years ago when Joker who was a 2 Seed lost to Claire Redfield who was a 15 seed in the first match! If you check my analysis for that contest I and everyone else agreed that Persona was damn weak until then. But now it is really strong. Strange how things work. Even the prediction percentage was huge for P5 for Round 3!
Tsunami's Analysis[]
Ah, now this is more like the Sonic we know and love. Horribly outmatched against anything with an ounce of strength. Mania is a return to the series' roots and was actually quite well-received by the fanbase that stuck with the series, but the damage has already been done; I'm pretty sure Sonic is an anti-vote magnet now. Which is not to take anything away from the legitimacy of Persona 5's wins; anti-votes alone don't cause doublings unless you were fairly close to able to do that anyway. But yeah, it's hard to have much faith in Sonic for anything anymore. Even the casuals knew it; Persona 5's 63.69% prediction percentage was fourth among the sixteen winners in Round 3. Its 95.07% prediction percentage with Gurus was, uh...tied for fifth. With Skyrim.
I'm happy about this. I haven't played Persona 5, because I so rarely buy new games these days (and have enough of a backlog that I won't run out of new stuff to play any time soon), but I love the Shin Megami Tensei series as a whole and the Persona sub-series sounds like it'd be even further up my alley.
