The two Zelda titans put out championship-caliber performances in round 1 of this contest, but to get a laughable blowout you need the right opponent. For all we know Cave Story might have been bandwagoned in a different spot, but as-is it was simply destined to join contest legends like Tanner and Madden. It did manage to avoid being last place in the stats though, so there's that.
Ctes's Analysis[]
Here we have the second biggest blowout of the contest and thus a short write-up. A Link to the Past was one of the contenders for second strongest game on out site pre-rally and it certainly looked today like it might just be that, but it's also possible Cave Story is just that weak. However, with this being Year of SNES, A Link to the Past might just have gotten the push it needed to possible threaten Final Fantasy VII and RBY for the title, though Chrono Trigger would still rival it. Of all the games that could possibly be the second strongest game, A Link to the Past was the only one put in the bottom half of the bracket, so we wouldn't really get to know. On one hand, it's a bit of a shame, because it would be nice to see just where it stood compared to the other contenders. But on the other hand, it's kind of nice that we avoid as much Zelda domination as possible, but putting the three strongest of them as close as they could get by their seeding. Some games are gonna get wasted to them, but that can never be completely avoided. It wouldn't be an issue if we had contests more often though. Then we could easily have this now and then set up Chrono Trigger vs. Link to the Past rematch next time or something, but you never know when next time will be.
As for Cave Story, celebrate fans of the game, your game made it in. I'd say waste of a spot, but it's nice if you really like the game to just see it in. I know the feeling, as I had it when Jet Set Radio made the bracket in 2010 as a #16 seed, even if it suffered perhaps the worst loss of the contest to Resident Evil 4, not as the biggest blowout, but by not winning in any single part of the world anywhere, despite how many places we only get like one vote from. It's nice to see your game get representation.
