Looking back on it now, there was evidence Majora's Mask was a threat to win the title right here in its first match. It's funny when you look back and realize the big debate was Majora's Mask vs Pokémon GSC. The true debate should have been Majora's Mask vs Final Fantasy X.
People tried to downplay this because LOL Wii and LOL Wii Sports and LOL casual gamers and etc, but the fact remains Wii Sports might have the highest play rate of any game ever made. It has the highest sales, at the very least. Say whatever you will about the Wii, and most of the criticism will be warranted, but facts are facts. You can have your own opinions, but you can't have your own facts. Wii Sports is what it is.
And Zelda just murdered it. Good god. Melee might have gotten the biggest blowout of the contest, but no one cares about Guitar Hero anymore. People actually do care about Wii Sports, and Zelda just treated it like garbage here. This truly was a championship performance, and this was before Majora's Mask had any momentum in this contest at all. It actually had over 85% for a long time in this poll, before Wii Sports got the lonely old people morning vote boost.
Can you imagine what Ocarina of Time would have done to poor Wii Sports in Majora's place here?
