If you had any game other than Witcher 3 winning the bottom half of this bracket, round 1 should have dashed most of your hopes, and this match here should have killed the rest of them. This was a beating so laughably ridiculous that people threw around the three wonderful letters (SFF) to explain it, which does make a lot of sense under the circumstances, but I will once again make this point -- if people are calling your match SFF, it means you've accomplished something truly special by beating your opponent into a pulp in front of the entire world to see.

The only possible hope for Witcher 3 not to make the final was some weird hierarchy where Western SFF was a big deal, but Nintendo could possibly still beat it. This wasn't impossible, but it was extremely unlikely at this point. Almost breaking 80% on Mass Effect 3 here is just completely insane, regardless of how much SFF was involved. The concept of "Western SFF" is fairly new in our contests, and a lot of people discussed this being the first contest where such a thing was possible at all, and if such a thing does exist then Witcher 3 is clearly the king of it.

As for why it was so easy to SFF Mass Effect 3 like this, people will point to the obvious answers like "Bioware went SJW" or "The ending sucked". I'm going to go curveball on you -- the fanbase is indefensible trash, and they are why Mass Effect is dead. Not SJWs. Not Anita Sarkeesian. The fans are. Trust me, if feminism or SJW nonsense is what killed this series, I would be the first guy to mention it. But that isn't what happened. This all goes far deeper than a bad ending or erroneously consulting with a crazy lady for Mass Effect Andromeda.

Bioware fans were a low key terrible fanbase for a long time, far before the ending to Mass Effect 3 happened. They're typical PC Master Race weirdos who complain about every single stupid little thing, but they kept getting a pass because Bioware's games were usually good. KP has talked about this a lot over the years, and I still remember him pointing out how ridiculous these people were when the original Dragon Age came out. Eventually, Mass Effect 3 happened, and despite the game being 99.9% amazing, despite the multiplayer being incredible, these people bitched nonstop all over the internet like some idiot toddler whose parent wouldn't buy them a candy at the supermarket. We've all gone shopping when this has happened. It's never fun, and those one or two children ruin it for the rest of us.

Well these idiot Bioware fans ruined the franchise for the rest of us, long before Feminist Frequency or Mass Effect Andromeda ever happened. The whining over the ending was just absurd, and worse yet, EA caved to these idiots. The last thing you ever want to do with a spoiled brat kid is give it what it wants, because dumb kids can be trained the same way as dogs -- repetition and "let it cry". They'll get the message eventually.

EA screwing up and catering to these morons is what ultimately killed Mass Effect. Not Andromeda, not the feminists, and not the SJWs. The fans did this. Don't forget that if EA releases the Mass Effect Trilogy that's rumored, either. It does not change what the crybabies and the trolls did to this once very fine series. It's how you get Mass Effect 3 getting SFFd into oblivion. Witcher 3 is a beast, no doubt, but this wasn't all Witcher 3.

Oh and while we're on the subject of fans killing a franchise, WWE has been giving wrestling fans everything they've asked for for years. You wanted Seth as champion. Got it. You wanted Brock to put people over. Got it. You wanted Becky as champion. Got it. You wanted Kofi as champion. Got it. You wanted Roman out of the title picture. Got it. You wanted competition that's able to put on a good show. Got it. Among a whole lot of other things.

And surprise surprise, wrestling is still garbage compared to what it used to be. Turns out listening to a bunch of smarks didn't work after all.

Ctes's Analysis[]

This was the match that truly changed the favorite to reach Breath of the Wild from this side of the bracket. The Witcher 3 looks so great today. Everyone who picked Skyrim in the semi-finals knew they were in deep trouble. Everyone who believes Persona will win whenever there’s a small chance knew now that it would take a miracle. Dark Souls supporters knew that even if they got past Skyrim, the final was almost out of the question. Galaxy 2 supporters literally lost all hope today. Not a single oracle went expected Witcher to win by this match, the closest being more than 1% away, and the second closest being more than 3% away. This was a bloodbath out of nowhere. It certainly wasn’t just Assassin’s Creed Odyssey being downvoted into oblivion. The Witcher 3 was serious now.

The previous games contest actually saw Mass Effect 2 probably being the weakest, though of course, they’re as hard to compare as it gets due to Undertale and that Metal Gear Solid 3 vs. Mass Effect 2 match was all kinds of weird. Even so, it was pretty clear that the games weren’t too far ahead. Mass Effect 3 might have been hurt by the format a bit. The Witcher 3 is mentioned everyone when it comes to Game of the Decade and Mass Effect 3 will forever be hunted by the controversial ending, sadly. But even if you think the contest title severely boosted Mass Effect 2 and did the opposite to the third one, there’s no denying how incredible The Witcher 3 looks here.

The Witcher 3 looks a lot more mortal later in the contest, although the games standing up to all finish within the top 8 of the x-stats. I’m not trying to take any credit away from this result, but Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Persona 5 are vastly different from The Witcher 3 in terms of fans, while Mass Effect and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey share a lot more of their fans with it. It was later widely accepted some kind of SFF happened here, popularly called Western SFF. We’ll save the talk of why that’s a stupid name for another time. Although given what we seem to know the forced voting and contest title can do to matchups like this one, it seems pretty likely that Mass Effect 3 was also hurt a bit by usual SFF, which redeems its performance a good bit.

Safer777's Analysis[]

So I thought that Witcher 3 wouldn't break 70 here since well ME is a beloved franchise and except the ending controversy ME 3 is a pretty good game. Plus it is the game that I have played the most online with others. Seriously I had so much fun and I even found a lot of people from my country to play around. But as you see I was damn wrong. Even the Crew had W3 around 72. Pretty sure after this result Witcher 3 was the favorite to reach the final match.

So for the match. W3 dominated and nobody expected this much as I said. So yeah W3 is a beast and it is almost a lock to reach the final match. It would be awesome if it won but alas. Netflix boost for sure! I called it first on this site too! Yeah I am that amazing! Also another strange thing that I saw was that people saying that we had Western SFF? Huh? Seriously this has to be first. These games are completely different. Where is the SFF? This is like saying that MGS and Silent Hill if they face each other MGS would win because of East SFF? Come on, SFF doesn't work that way.

Tsunami's Analysis[]

Holy shit what just happened

Any semblance of faith that anyone might have still had in the 2015 X-Stats meaning anything at all was obliterated here. Yes, we all knew there was no good way to figure out a proper X-Stat value for ME3 since it faced Undertale in Round 1, but the one they eventually came up with had it still beating ME2. Now, ME2 was in Division 8 and Witcher 3 in Division 7, so their relative X-Stat values should be fairly accurate--that's the SMRPG quarter, so the only SFF match that can gum things up was MGS-MGS3 in the Division 8 finals.

The adjusted X-Stats say that the Witcher 3 only wins that matchup with 53.59%. The raw X-Stats say that Mass Effect 2 wins it with 50.56%. Yes, we all know that ME3 > ME2 was comical to begin with, but this is an absolute brutalization. A lot of people said this was a huge SFF match. It probably was, but we've had SFF matches be close before. This is a beatdown, and taken at face value would arguably make Witcher 3 the favorite to win the whole damn contest. Something very strange was happening here.

Some people were even saying that ME3 was getting caught in Undertale's backlash, either being punished for not stopping the menace before it could be started or for riding Undertale's wake to an undeserved #2 in the raw X-Stats. This was of course ridiculous, and yet, Witcher 3 was only 13th in R1 prediction percentage yet 3rd in R2 percentage, behind only BotW and Skyrim. It's clear the voters had no respect for ME3 at all.
