Finally, a match with a bit of meat to it. Or a lot, given that Aeris is one of the two characters involved.
Zelda was the clear favorite to win this thing even before the contest, and even before the news that Twilight Princess and the Wii would be delayed until the day after the contest was scheduled to close (literally). A rumor was going around about the system being released mid-October, but this never happened.
Even then however the Link and Ganon boosts over the last few years put Zelda well ahead of Aeris in potential. This said, there would be zero excuses that could be made for Aeris in the event of a loss. This match happened a day or two after the release of FF12, and Zelda looked like utter and absolute crap in that match pic. Aeris meanwhile had her beyond awesome Chain of Memories sprite going. What excuse could Aeris possibly have for losing?
It's actually a wonder she didn't get her face kicked in worse than she did. Zelda flew over 60% early in that looked like the makings of a blowout, but Aeris recovered well in percentage. Aeris chipped the percentage down below 55% with the aid of the night vote, and it took the god-like Zelda day vote to push Zelda back near 57. Aeris was rather impressive in not getting completely killed, but one has to wonder how close this match is if it takes place in 2003. It can also be argued that FF12 and the pic made a difference of a percentage point or two, but we'll never really know nor does it matter. Zelda was never in danger of losing this thing, though she did lose a few updates before the Zelda day vote kicked in.
