Some indie games looked alright this contest. Most did not. The Tales Principle was another in the long line of low seeded indie darlings that existed simply to get their asses whipped by the heavy hitters. Allen almost did too good of a job with the seeding this year, but it is what it is. Contests with 128 entrants have a lot of early round blah to get through.
New rule. Two video games can't have the same exact name. No more "Doom" meaning two things. No more "Resident Evil 2" meaning two things. No more "God of War" meaning two things. None of it. It's a stupid, lazy, cheap marketing ploy to get sales. That said, God of War is an all-time amazing video game and one of the best paradigm shifts in gaming history. It really is. I know a lot of you don't like hack-n-slash, and that's fine! You do you. God of War 2018 is not hack-n-slash. It's an open world adventure of sorts. It was out for blood this contest, too. Sort of. This match had a lot to do with Talos Principle being a complete unknown, because Kratos isn't the type of dude to score 85% blowouts in these things and we all knew he was no threat to actually win the division. Witcher 3 or Mario Galaxy 2 would make sure of that.
It's a shame this site doesn't really care about God of War, because these games deserve to do a lot better than they ultimately do. Kratos has a phenomenal character arc ongoing, too. I've played every game in this series, and God of War 2018 is the best one by quite a lot. If you only ever play one God of War game, this is the one to play. Scout's honor.
Ctes's Analysis[]
God of War was hyped to be something that could upset some #1 seeds before the contest. The game was very well received, and it got very close to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in the final Game of the Year poll of 2018, a poll that people like to being up more often that it probably should be, but nevertheless served to hype God of War quite a bit. God of War was however put in division of The Witcher 3, which had the potential to be the worst one you could draw other than of course Breath of the Wild.
God of War did its best to live up to its hype, by almost cracking 85%, something that is never a bad result. It was against The Talos Principle, which is one of the weakest games of the bracket, but again, getting a percentage among the best of the contest isn’t bad. This match didn’t make its chances of living up to the hype worse. The problem was that The Witcher 3 did almost just as well on Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, and while those two are more similar, Assassin’s Creed is also a much bigger name than The Talos Principle. God of War looked to be in a very similar situation to Super Mario Galaxy 2, which also demolished fodder but looked right ahead at The Witcher 3. The chances of God of War making it out of the division were not looking great.
The Talos Principle is just happy to be the contest. It’s one of the most obscure games in the bracket, but perhaps being ported to consoles in recent years gave it just enough exposure to make it in. It probably needed to be against something unknown or something that gets anti-voted if it were to do better than this. Considering it’s a #15 seed, only the latter seems possible, so I guess Three Houses was its best bet? Or The Last of Us if the leaks of the second game had emerged earlier? It’s a fun game if you’re into puzzle stuff, so hopefully its contest showing made some play it that had not already.

So we have GOW here. No not the one from 2005, the one from 2018. Why they couldn't add something to the sequel to differentiate it from the first game in the series I am not sure. GOW is excellent. Very different from the original trilogy too. The original trilogy was linear action adventure without character development and such. Kratos was always angry and was killing everything on sight. But GOW changed all that. We even moved from Ancient Greece to Ancient Scandinavia! Makes sense since Kratos killed all major Greek Gods so we had to change scenery! But man this game is huge with a lot of stuff to do, random loot, side bosses, side quests, amazing character development, exploration and optional areas and so much more. Seriously if you haven't played the game just play it. It is way too good. Deserves the GOTD title too. Also NO stupid DLC and Microtransactions. Just a huge Single Player game with a ton of stuff to do as you know were a ton of games a few years ago before companies became greedy? As for TP...it is a walking simulator? Yeah I don't know anything about that.
So for the match. Okay the only question was how much GOW would win. And it won with really high percentage. Almost 85%. So yeah amazing performance. I do believe it is the strongest Sony exlusive game. But it is the strongest Western game here? Probably not but well we shall see.

I really don't want to talk about this match.
No, seriously, I really don't want to talk about this.
I got this right in Guru, of course. Everyone did. And at 96.1%, it was second only to Breath of the Wild in prediction percentage among the casuals, too. Was I under some delusion that God of War was no longer popular here? Did I accidentally mistake the Talos Principle for something that might have anything remotely resembling strength? Or was I just not paying attention?! Because honestly, there is no good excuse for being more than 10 points behind the second-worst Oracle prediction when you're not predicting an upset or even a threat of one. This match has single-handedly convinced me to start keeping tabs on what I put into Oracle for every match and adjusting them if I think I messed up. Predicting 61% for a match where the actual winning percentage was nearly 85% can do that to a guy.
Even without the benefit of being an established franchise, God of War's genre is much more of an asset this contest than it seems like it would've been in years past. That was just such a huge blunder on my part that I actually went to check my Guru to see if I'd screwed anything up in later rounds. Then I remembered what its next opponent was/would have been. Yes, it turns out, I am in the majority that picked God of War to make Round 4 and then lose. I just had a major stupid when it came to making my Oracle picks.
