One day after the Pokémon > Metroid bandwagon formed, it was all put to rest. However, one needs to look into Metroid's past in Nintendo v Nintendo matches to see why that bandwagon began in the first place:

Samus has never been able to SFF anything. I doubt that she even SFFd Isaac. As for why she can't SFF anything, who in the world knows. One could credit Metroid only being popular in America, but this is an America-based website.
Yet for whatever reason, Samus' series whipped the holy hell out of Kirby's series. Samus started near 68%, and though the percentages stayed even as hell all match, it doesn't take away from how big a match this was for Samus. Most didn't expect her series to do this, and if this is a character match, I doubt Kirby goes below 40%. Either Metroid scored SFF here (for the first time ever in a Nintendo match), or Kirby's games are just that weak and his popularity stems from SSB/M and character design.
As much as I'd like to credit Samus finally breaking through, I think it's the latter more than anything. Why would Samus not SFF anything Nintendo until now? How many people list a Kirby game as one of their favorites? How many Kirby games made it into the Spring 2004 Contest? And for whatever reason the Top 100 Games link goes to recent top ten lists at the moment, so I can't exactly look up how many Kirby games made it.
Regardless, I don't know how much of this was Metroid actually SFFing Kirby, though it did put to rest the Pokémon bandwagons.
