With how Melee crushed Guitar Hero 2 with this division's first match, it was on Brawl to match. Looking back on it, Brawl was the more impressive game from the start in this contest. Even taking account Melee getting all night matches (Smash is awful at night) and Brawl getting all day matches, 87% on Guitar Hero 2 is not as impressive as a whopping 83% on Mario Kart DS.
Mind you this was after Brawl lost the board vote, which would be a common theme for it all contest long. But SFF match or not, 83% on any Mario Kart game is an absolutely insane number. People forget Mario Kart DS finished second in our 2005 Game of the Year polling. It's not a joke game by any stretch, but Brawl came out here and just made it look like absolute crap. Suddenly Melee's murdering of Guitar Hero 2 didn't mean as much, because it was impossible to imagine Brawl not repeating the same performance.
The only real argument in Melee's favor at this point would be nostalgia and the fanbase preferring Melee, and we all saw how that went. But on pure strength alone, Melee clearly had no argument. It was at best Brawl's equal indirectly.
