I have to hand it to WoW's fans for not being the most annoying during a contest match in the Best Series Ever contest. That honor goes to Dragon Quest fans by light years, even if primacy and recency effects will cause people to think that it's something else.

Dragon Quest fans really took the cake in this department. Never before have I born witness to such massive amounts of nonsensical whining over a premeditated blowout than I have during this match. The general complaints were that Smash Brothers wasn't a series, that it was little more than a party fighter (even though both games are better than any other fighter by eons, regardless of what the elitist traditional fighting game fans say), and that it shouldn't have even been in this contest in the first place. Oh, and that Dragon Quest's place in gaming history should have caused it to win.

On NintendoFAQs, as a cult icon (which is all that DQ is these days in America), against Nintendo's most popular game over the last five years. Right.

DQ's fans managed to overshadow the fact that based on expectations, Dragon Quest did fairly well here. There was almost no percentage movement at all during the match, save for SSB leveling off a little bit in the first few hours. Those that bothered ignoring all of the whining used this match to sound the Sonic > SSB alarms, because Board 8 loves to call entire contests based on the first five minutes of any match. We've literally reached an age in these contests where people call everything based on unrealistic expectations instead of something just winning or losing, but that's a different issue entirely.

It also has to be noted that Jigglypuff appears twice in the match picture. One is easy to see, but look closely in the middle of Dragon Quest's side. WTF happened there?

Anyhoo, based on what you thought SSB *should* have done (which is a really stupid way to look at contest matches, but I digress), it either performed well or massively disappointed. Yay possible Sonic/Smash slobberknocker. And congrats to Dragon Quest's fans for representing their series well during the match. I'm sure the way you all acted will convince others to rally behind DQ games and characters for future contests. Or not.
