I really have to hand it to Lara here, because I expected her to get destroyed -- just like in every other contest she's ever been in. Yet for whatever reason, this contest was different. Not only did Lara have Legends (Tomb Raider's RE4, from what I hear), but she had most of the brackets behind her as well. You have to go all the way back to 2002 stats to consider Lara capable of doing this well in any match.
What's funny is that for awhile, it looked like Chun-Li was going to rip into Lara like most everyone before her. She was at 61% and climbing fast early in the match, but then the sad Street Fighter day vote kicked in. Chun bled percentage all through the match and finished with a mere 55-45 win over a washed up hack. Sad effort no matter how you view it, and Chunner's once-viable upset bid over Yuna died after this match.
Maybe Lara is another of those characters that can be grouped into the Ryu/Dante/Zero mold, in that she performs decently unless put up against a Squintendo character. 2003 and especially 2004 both saw her lose rather badly to Nintendo characters, and I don't even think she was in 2005. It's a theory that makes as much sense as anything else, because I doubt a new game played by 6 people did all that much. And for what it's worth, 2002 stats did kind of call this <_<
(Damn 2002 stats.)
