This was the first Pokémon game we saw in action, and its performance was a bad sign of things to come in the future. No one wanted to look at this match and extrapolate Pokémon losing a step from it, but this is exactly what it meant. Look even deeper and you can gleam GSC not getting the HGSS boost so many banked on.
It's not that Pokémon is weak, because it's not. But the peak for anything past RBY is long over. 55% on a clearly weaker game when it shares a handheld fanbase is awful. The vote totals and prediction percentage based on what should have happened here were also awful.
This isn't a random rant, either. Only 20 people in the Oracle picked DPP to get under 60% here. This was a terrible performance by the game no matter what damage control the fans want to come up with. Metroid is a decently strong series on this site, but to embarrass Pokémon takes more than that. This was all DPP tanking out of nowhere, and also worth noting is the game kept losing percentage with the morning vote, against something that isn't totally day-oriented.
