I've mentioned this a few times already, but they're called "one point upsets" for a reason. Rayman Legends pulled off a good one over Celeste in round one in one of the contest's best matches, but then round 2 came and it was time to enjoy the, uh.... benefits of making it into round 2.
If anyone doubted that Pokemon HeartGold SoulSilver PowerCrystal CourageColor WisdomPrism wasn't a sufficient proxy for the original Pokemon Gold / Silver / Crystal, this match ended all of those doubts real quick. There was absolutely zero chance Rayman was winning this match, and that's okay. His success came in just getting to this point.
This was a blowout big enough to raise alarm bells for the potential of Pokemon knocking off the Western heavy hitters later in this bracket, and for those playing the home game, this win meant Resident Evil 2, Persona 4 Golden, and Pokemon HGSS all easily made it into round 3. This added a lot of fuel to those who questioned the eligibility of those games.
This also set up a round 3 match against Nier Automata, and apparently the Nier people thought that game had a chance to win that match. Um, have you guys not been looking at these contests or something?
Ctes's Analysis[]
Pokemon HGSS went through another round looking about as good as it was expected to. Following up on the victories of Resident Evil 2 and Persona 4 Golden, it seemed clear at this point that HGSS would not be a victim of its remake status. Although HGSS is still in another place than the other two. Not being downvoted for being a remake is one thing, but could it act as a proxy of GSC similar to what Persona 4 Golden was doing? It remained to be seen. Everything in its path so far were untested outside of meaningless GotY polls.
It would go into its big third round match as the favorite, because most people expected Rayman to be better than Divinity, the latter being one of the games brought up in the debates of what was the weakest game to win a match. It was also rallied ever so slightly, but you had to make some bold assumptions for NieR: Automata to remain the favorite in that match. While things ahead looked to be tougher for HGSS after the first round, despite looking impressive in it, it was certainly the favorite to win now, if it wasn’t already. Rayman Legends get to lose in one the most boring round 2 matches of the contest, but the franchise can look back as this contest happily, as it got its first ever contest victory.
Safer777's Analysis[]
So a remake of the best Pokemon game ever here. Still I don't understand how this is the only Pokemon game that has entered this contest. Where is Pokemon Go? Pretty sure that Pokemon game was the one that people talked the most in the previous decade.
So for the match. Okay obviously HG/SS would win here. RL BARELY won in the first match. Plus I don't think anyone cares for Rayman now. HG/SS score above 70 and that is the only thing that matters. Pretty easy victory and we STILL can't calculate how strong HG/SS is! How so many weak games entered this contest?
Tsunami's Analysis[]
Since this was an utterly predictable outcome, I'm going to instead use this space to talk about something interesting about all four matches today (also, this was the final day of four matches at once, which should be noted). There were still more registered than unregistered voters today, yet in all four matches, the loser got more raw votes from the unregistered voters than from the registered. Were we finally being noticed and "anti-voted"? It was hard to say; as Zen's screencapping topic would show, Reddit no longer seemed to have a hold on what would make us angry.
Also I needed to mention that registered voters were still the majority on this day because I completely failed to notice that three days earlier, they weren't. Witcher 3-Mass Effect 3 was the only one of the four matches that day where both games got more than 50% of their raw votes from unregistered voters, while SMG2 was the only one of the four winners to get over 50% of their raw votes from the registered voters.
