Did you know this is the first ever contest match featuring a Tomb Raider game? Bit of random trivia for you. Lara Croft herself has an extensive contest history, but Tomb Raider just has this one match. This wasn't exactly the best debut, but it wasn't the worst either. We've certainly seen far worse. This was a typical, boring, predictable, ho-hum beating that Portal 2 put out here. This was certainly not the type of performance that would hint at what Portal 2 would ultimately end up doing in this contest.
The main comparison here was Portal 2's performance in round 1 versus Kingdom Hearts 3 and Red Dead Redemption 2. Portal 2 was the guru favorite to win three matches, in large part because of what happened in 2015. It lost a close match to Sonic 2, which ultimately scored 22% in its loss to Pokemon. Not only did the game that beat Portal 2 get destroyed that year, but it had an inflated value due to being locked behind Undertale.
I wasn't seeing what made Portal 2's being a hidden beast so obvious, and this match here against Tomb Raider wasn't exactly gangbusters, but hey, that's why I talk about what happens after the fact and you're all smart enough to see it coming better than I can :D
I really would love to know how you all knew, because I don't think that Sonic 2 loss was some SFF beating.

Portal 2 was thought to be the most likely game to make the division finals, but I don’t think anyone of us had huge confidence in it. Kingdom Hearts is a more beloved franchise of ours, Red Dead Redemption 2 had good potential and even Animal Crossing could be good enough now that New Horizons had released to the best possible reception right before the contest. Back when the Portal games came out they were huge, spawned countless memes, and they were very popular here too. The board loved them. Portal 2 is only just recent enough to be in this contest. Its heydays are over. GLaDOS looked quite a bit weaker in 2018 than in previous contests. Portal 2 could only fall so much and not be out of favor for the spot.
It ended up having the worst winning percentage of the day, so it shouldn’t be too dominant, but it still came out of round 1 as the favorite. Tomb Raider is a good game. It’s far from the series peak, but you should pick it against the other losing games today. It can do something on name alone, particularly when we have forced voting. People that have played neither game today might vote for the franchise with the bigger name. Portal is not the best series to take advantage of that against, but it still made Portal 2 look good enough here.
We will probably never know how well the old Tomb Raider games would’ve done in a contest setting, but I’m not expecting it to be much more than this honestly. Maybe if we had a contest when they were new, but they would be riding more on their name than the actual games themselves. There is probably a reason that Tomb Raider has never been in any games contests before. Even back in the early contests, Lara Croft was never that good and I’m not thinking the games would be better relative to the field than she has ever been.

Portal and Half Life are these PC games that EVERY PC gamer raves about. Of course these have come in consoles but still they are primarily known as PC games. Also both portal games have appeared a lot in the games contests. As I said the Portal series is popular but I do believe they haven't released another game for some years. Well I guess either company doesn't see much money from this series otherwise why not made another one? Tomb Raider is here too! Oh it is the TR from 2013, not the one from 1996. Okay I know they are reboots but can't these companies add something to differentiate the titles of the same series? Mortal Kombat got rebooted a few years ago too BUT at least they named it MK9 because it was actually the 9th main game! I mean seriously. I have played the TR trilogy and it is fun but they tend to blend together since they are basically the same games, one on an island, one on snow and one on jungle. Very similar which I guess it is good if you like it but still.
Also something that I have been informed. This is the first time EVER that a Tomb Raider game has got into a contest! Seriously! I know Lara has entered a contest many times but I could swear that a Tomb Raider game has taken part in a contest before. Apparently not. Damn! The old Tomb Raider Trilogy was so good back in the day. Also everyone was into Lara back in the day for 2 BIG reasons! Okay this is sexist but seriously even magazines were talking about this. I mean who cares for personality if you have big tits right? She was the first Video Game sex symbol too and she appeared in many non video game magazines too! I still have a giant poster of her in my door on my room that I got from a video game magazine like 25 years ago. Yup! You could say she was the first waifu before we ever knew what waifus were! The games were amazing too. They did well with the first 3, then they messed up and they had to be rebooted.
So for the match. TR got a bad draw. Sure it isn't as it used to be but it could beat some other games here, and not just some indies too. Plus Lara Croft isn't what she used to be. Of course like 25 years ago that the 1st TR game came out we had barely any main female hero and she became extremely popular for a while. She was in magazines, giving interviews, various events, movies, weird merhandise and anything really. But they kept messing the games and eventually the TR games just stopped coming out. So the Reboot was a huge success but not anything different than a ton of other games. Also from the new trilogy the 1st TR game is considered the best and the 3rd the worse strangely enough. So yeah Portal 2 was always going to be the winner. Still I would like to see at least a doubling here but eh.

There was a lot of doubt as to whether Portal 2 would be terribly strong. The series seemed to be something that came and went--the first game did well in the first GotD because it was still fresh in everyone's minds, but it had a short shelf life. And this result...seems to suggest that the concern was warranted. Tomb Raider hasn't been worth a damn here in ages, if it ever was; Lara was at least worth a little bit in the early Character Battles but then again she was one of the pioneers of TJF in video game character design.
Of course, people had concerns about its next opponent as well so who knows what would happen next.
