The fact that a game with questionable qualifications for this contest almost got to beat three of my all-time favorite games right in a row makes it really, really hard to like Resident Evil 2 moving forward, but at least the game was a full remake instead of something truly dumb going on this run. I probably would have lost my mind if this was something truly dumb like Ocarina of Time 3D; at least Resident Evil 2 was a new game of sorts. Granted, Doom also cheated with its name. I can't deny it. I've mentioned this before, but enough with games within the same series having the exact same name. It is so stupid.
I debated this match for quite a long time in my bracket, and settled on Resident Evil 2 winning for a few reasons. First and most importantly, this is not a web site that has ever cared about FPS games. Doom is very popular on this site, but FPS by and large is very hard to have faith in in any debated match. Secondly, "Resident Evil 2" is a former contest champion. I don't say that ironically, either. 1998 dominated Best Year in Gaming that nothing held it under 66% for that entire contest. If you've never looked this up, check out how laughably, absurdly stacked that year was in gaming: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1998_in_video_games
We can joke all day long about Turok 2, Oddworld, and NFL Blitz being contest champions, but that stuff is the truth. When people see "Resident Evil 2" on their screen, it's going to get nostalgia votes from being from 1998.
Third, any boost from Doom Eternal was going to be offset by Resident Evil 3's remake coming out mid-contest. It launched on April 3rd. This match took place on April 13th. That's just way too much for Doom to overcome, which is why I ultimately settled on Mass Effect 2 > Resident Evil 2 deciding this division. It killed me to pick against Doom here, but it was a relief to see that this match was never close. Had I picked Doom and it won some legendary duel, I would have never forgiven myself. As-is, I and.... 140 out of 142 gurus simply made the obvious call. Doom was never going to make a match out of this, and the blowout was so decisive that you could take all of the advantages away from Resident Evil 2 and it likely wins anyway. Remove the RE3 Remake release date, change RE2's name to "Resident Evil 2: Remake", and release Doom Eternal on the day of the match itself and Resident Evil 2 likely still wins in the 55-45 range.
It was a dominant performance by Resident Evil 2, and set it squarely as the favorite next match.

This match wasn’t really in doubt before the contest where all but two gurus picked Resident Evil 2 and didn’t think more about it, but DOOM delivered such an insane percentage in round 1 that made people have second thoughts. Most people still went ahead with Resident Evil 2, since it also did really well in round 1, but a few people took DOOM and there were more people that considered it.
In the end we overestimated DOOM quite a bit. It turns out INSIDE was just extremely weak and from this point forward it was in clear contention for being the weakest game in the bracket, a title it eventually won, even in the adjusted x-stats. DOOM was actually doing a little bit worse than this before the Bloodborne rallies hit and boosted it. The match was never really in doubt.
Perhaps a Bethesda backlash did something here, but I find that doubtful because Fallout: New Vegas didn’t look to be affected any and DOOM is also only published by them. We saw Fallout 4 get destroyed at the same time as this match, clearly that’s where the damage was done. DOOM could use its name to go really high on INSIDE in round 1 because no one knows that game, but against a Resident Evil game, that would not be as helpful. DOOM might’ve made for a better match elsewhere, but at least it made us doubt a match that we shouldn’t have doubted by going so high in round 1.
Doom Eternal coming out right before the contest began might’ve helped it a little bit, so Resident Evil 2 was looking really good here. Resident Evil 7 also looked really good from this day forward, another good thing for Resident Evil 2 supporters. It was not expected by many to have problems before the division finals before the contest and it was probably the favorite to win it at this point, at least it was after round 1. Though now Bloodborne showed itself capable of successful rallying in a match it already won, so Resident Evil 2 would need its a-game to get through then.

Hey battle of the reboots/remakes/games that have the same title as their predecessors? Seriously companies change the titles! Remind me of Rambo movies where the 4th Rambo movie is called... Rambo! So when people talk about Rambo you have to ask if they mean the first movie or the 4th movie even though the 1st movie had another title but EVERYONE just calls it Rambo. Ahem. This match was debatable because both games did good in Round 1. Also they both had sequels that came out on contest season so more power to them.
So for the match. Once again the Crew was split. That is 2 splits on the same day! In 1st round both games faced really weak opponents and did similar percentages. So I believe that RE 2 won because RE 3 came out recently plus we don't like FPS here. Still nice match. These matches that are debatable are always nice to see them. The prediction percentage was high too so few were fooled.

Huh, maybe DOOM's blowout of INSIDE wasn't just INSIDE being piss-weak? Not to say that it isn't, but apparently DOOM has some real strength. Or RE2 isn't as strong as it seems. Still, 57.57% is not a great score for Resident Evil 2; according to the 2009 X-Stats, RE2 should get 66.28%.
That may or may not have been an excuse to put "according to the 2009 X-Stats" into a write-up about a contest that only covers games released between 2010 and 2019. I was planning on using the 2004 X-Stats, but apparently RE2 didn't make that contest. I guess first entry syndrome won out there; I always thought RE2 was better regarded than RE1, but RE1's the only one that made it in '04. Granted, '04's nomination process was awful and resulted in a bunch of games from obscure systems getting in.
Also, unlike RE2, the "DOOM" in this contest is not a straight-up remake of the first game in the series. It's a brand new game, and was actually called "Doom 4" when it was first announced. So that makes the stat especially meaningless...except this is OldFAQs, where "pick the year closest to 1998" is a valid strategy. Resident Evil 2, the original one, is a 1998 video game. Wouldn't you expect it to get even higher on 2016's "Doom 4" than 1993's "Doom"?
Also, holy crap that is legitimately 21 years between original and remake. That's long enough to be "excusable". It's really been that long since the fifth generation, huh? And yet we're still technically considered to be in the eighth generation, even though we all know that since the Wii U is an eighth generation console, the Switch kind of has to be a ninth generation console by default. It'll probably be reclassified as a 9th gen console once the PS5 and XBSX come out later this year.
The Switch has officially succeeded the 3DS, also an eighth-generation system, as well as the Wii U. Even more evidence that the 9th generation is already well underway.
