Portal deserved better :'(
Seeing two of my favorites against each other this early is always painful, though it will happen sometimes. The match itself was nothing notable, though Melee's percentage bleed is impressive sometimes. This game is a godslayer during the power hour, then routinely drops. In this match it started at 75%, then dropped a bunch before recovering to nearly 68. This would have been relevant to make note of had the Chrono Trigger/Melee match been normal, but as we all know it would not end up being normal. This match lined up with the 2009 and Game of the Decade stats pretty well, and gave no real indication that Chrono Trigger would have annihilated Melee in a non-rally match.
Speaking of rallies, I think it's fair to say Portal would have been in contention to win a contest had it come out and caught the "cake is a lie" craze during the modern era. Us Undertale fans are obviously very happy right now, but jobbing out as a 14 seed might be our future in due time. Rallied entities never last, and it's hard to imagine Portal not qualifying for that category.
Ctes's Analysis[]
When we saw this match, we thought it was a shame that Portal was pretty much wasted in the bracket. Both games made top 16 in Game of the Decade, but Portal never had a chance here. It could've won several matches if placed differently in the bracket though. That was what we thought at least, but Melee ended up winning this match by much more than expected. While no one thought this was close, Melee was not supposed to score a doubling.
People saw no reason for a Melee decline, it was pretty obvious which of the two had changed since last contest. I still believe Portal could've done better if it had better bracket placement, but it's probably less of a waste than we initially thought. The 3 point match of Sonic 2 vs. Portal 2 was looking really good in Sonic's favor after these first two days. Mega Man X scoring 60% on Batman was one thing, as it made the older game the favorite, but Portal disappointing here was what made the Portal 2 supporters worried the most.
