When I first saw the bracket I almost picked Civ 5 to pull the upset, but that's because I'm dumb and haven't played the Dark Souls series yet. Outside of FLOWCHART™ reasons, Dark Souls could very well be the most popular modern series in gaming. Gamers absolutely revere the series for being mercilessly old-school, and in a gaming world with checkpoints every 2 seconds and linear everything, Dark Souls decides to not give a crap and just chops your balls off whenever possible.
Gamers rewarded this by giving Dark Souls the easy doubling over Civilization 5, and it was rather obvious after round 1 that MGS5 was completely screwed in round 2. There was no way it had a prayer of beating this game. It's fun to think about how far Dark Souls could have gone if it was in Division 7 or 8, but alas.
Ctes's Analysis[]
I don't think anyone doubted who the winner would be here, but the match served as a decent indicator for whether or not Dark Souls would have a chance at upsetting MGSV in round 2. The other match probably says a whole lot more, but we hadn't yet actually seen Dark Souls in these contests and upset wouldn't only require a MGSV disappointment, it would also require Dark Souls showing some strength. Civilization V would obviously be really darn weak. IV was in the last contest and lost to Persona 3, it wouldn't take much, but if Dark Souls couldn't score somewhat big on Civilization V here, then it probably wouldn't have what it took to take advantage of a weakened Metal Gear Solid series against its latest entry.
It did however score big. A doubling is pretty good here. Dark Souls is a new game too, and I feel like we took its strength for granted. All debates about the upcoming match with MGSV were about the strength of MGSV, not Dark Souls. Dark Souls fit well with our expectations, but I don't really feel like it was any guarantee. It's nice to see a recent game do well though, just because it's not that common and Dark Souls is a really darn game too. People complain about games being easy today, despite most non-Nintendo games giving you a choice of difficulty, but if you want a challenge, this is the kind of game you wanna play and it's lots of fun!
