Before we get to the match itself, Minecraft came out in 2009. It shouldn't have been in this contest at all, and no I don't care that it was in beta in 2009. League of Legends was disallowed from this contest because its beta was in 2009, so why does Minecraft get a pass? League having an awful fanbase doesn't mean we should have selectively enforced rules on bracket entry, and their subreddit doesn't allow for rallying anymore anyway. League would have gotten annihilated in this contest, and on the off chance it got rallied, so what? Rallies are always a good thing. No one will ever convince me of otherwise. Either both League and Minecraft are eligible, or neither are.

I bring this all up because Dota 2, despite making its contest debut, never stood a chance here. It had a trash can performance against a game that GameFAQs doesn't care about at all -- Minecraft lost to Halo, of all things -- and Dota 2 did so badly here that it clearly falls in the realm of rallybait getting punished. Dota was never rallied, but this thing might as well have been a proxy for League for how hard it got buried.

By the way, if you haven't listened to Ngamer's pro Dota rant on The Show, I suggest you check it out. I probably played 10,000 games of the original Dota, and I still voted for Minecraft here. The fanbase is truly that horrible, and it's what finally (mercifully) got me to quit. NG still loves the franchise though, and bless his little heart for it. I can see why. The games truly are a remarkable accomplishment and no two games are the same, but the actual people who play it are so, so awful. Co-op gameplay is probably not something I would ever bother with again, but I don't necessarily regret my old Dota playing days. They're some of the best gaming memories of my entire life. I just wish it actually... you know. Mattered?

NG had a very funny point about why Dota 2 wouldn't get rallied here even if it wasn't in line to get punished. Voting for Dota 2 constitutes "not playing Dota 2" behavior, and the fans would never do such a thing. Exactly my point, NG. You're just a lot nicer about it than I am. This speaks nothing of the toxicity, the leaving, the trash talking, the bullying, the false reporting, that stupid banlist, the botting, the hacking, and everything else. Good riddance, Dota. You will not be missed.

Well, except for oooooooone exception!

Ctes's Analysis[]

I do wish Dota 2 would have faced something other than Minecraft. Not because it would have won in many matches, but because it’s always fun to see casual bait lose a match against something far less known. Dota 2 is the type of game that would do that but look at what it faced. Minecraft. The biggest casual game ever, perhaps only rivaled by Wii Sports. Although Minecraft is probably slightly more cared about on a site like this. The prediction percentage against Dota is extremely high, so the casuals got this one right too.

Minecraft looks pretty good today, but it’s hard to make much of it facing a game that probably gets its share of anti-votes. The true testament of its strength would come next round. Last contest it looked decent enough against the original Halo before Halo died against Final Fantasy VII the following round. Those are all games with some share of anti-votes probably, but I don’t think it’s a lot in Minecraft’s case, which is part of the reason it won so easily. It might just be the true neutral. No one has strong opinions about it at all, but everyone knows what it is and we’re fine with it.

There has been talks about Minecraft’s eligibility in the contest because the classic version was made available in 2009. The full game was however was released in 2011, which is why it was allowed in. Most of the people complaining seem to complain because League of Legends was not allowed in while being in a similar situation. I’ve seen the same people claim both that Minecraft shouldn’t have been allowed and League of Legends should, which is a weird stance, but perhaps just a wish for consistency. If Allen told us that he just specifically targeted League of Legends I wouldn’t be terribly surprised. He specifically made Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask’s 3D version ineligible while allowing Persona 4 Golden and there’s not much consistency in that. I would also honestly believe him if he had told us it just didn’t receive enough nominations, but Dota 2 being in makes it seem likely it would have. It’s quite ironic in this Minecraft / League of Legends controversy, that Minecraft got to slaughter the game in the bracket League of Legends is most similar too.

My own stance? I said before League of Legends was in a similar situation and similar is the key word there. It’s not the same and I don’t think it makes much sense to include Minecraft in the complains about League of Legends honestly. Just because both initial “releases” have been called alpha does not make them the same. The League of Legends we had in 2009 was an actual release, even though it was not out everywhere, and they’ve worked on it since. Basically, every place will list 2009 as the release year of League of Legends. Minecraft will be split between 2009 and 2011, but the ones saying 2009 probably acknowledges that the official release was in 2011.

Of course, it sucks for League of Legends in terms of a contest like this that it’s release went the way it did, where some technicality means it couldn’t really compete in either Game of the Decade contest. I would not have minded it being allowed in because of this. It would’ve been an exception, but it would’ve been fair enough given the circumstances. I just wanted to point out I don’t think Minecraft should have been disallowed and I don’t think the decision on League of Legends should have anything to do with the decision on Minecraft. Besides, League of Legends would’ve been killed in round 1 in similar fashion to Dota 2, although probably worse because we bear a grudge on it here, so it’s not like we’re missing out on anything. Minecraft showed in this match that it’s worth having it in.

Safer777's Analysis[]

So we have the most popular game on the world here. And you may ask didn't you say that Fortnite is the most popular game on the world above? Yeah I did and it is true because both of these games are the most popular games on the world now. Depending on how you count. Fortnite is the most talked about game but Minecraft has more play rate. Oh and also apparently Minecraft is the best selling video game of all time. So there you go. Both of Fortnite and Minecraft are played mostly by people who are under 18 too. Yeah. Dota 2 is a MOBA game and guess what. We don't care for these kind of games here. BUT I want to say something. Why Minecraft is here? The game came out in 2009. Yeah the Beta started there and the official game came out in 2011 BUT League Of Legends came out with a Beta too in 2009 and the full game got released later and it wasn't allowed to enter this contest for this reason! I don't get it. Was the Admin afraid of a rally? Who the Hell cares for Gamefaqs now in order to rally something? Let us be serious. Pretty sure it would have lost in the first Round too. Well whatever.

So for the match. Well since we hate MOBAs here almost anything could beat DOTA 2. And it just happened to go against Minecraft which we don't really care. Strange thing is that Minecraft did better than we predicted too. I have seen gameplay of Minecraft and it never impressed me. I guess if I was 30 years younger I could like it along with Fortnite. I do believe that Dota 2 is good though, not as popular as LOL but pretty sure it is the 2nd best MOBA. Or at least the 2nd most popular one.

Tsunami's Analysis[]

This was just...why?

The outcome of this match was never going to be in doubt. I'm fairly certain that the Guest picker on the Crew only picked DotA 2 just to make sure there was no Crew Curse, because he, like all but one other Guru, had Minecraft in this match. But I'm going to quote the beginning of it anyway, because before it gets into the crazy logic, it makes a good point.

Neither of these genres are particularly liked by GameFAQs. Its strange though, because both of these games are popular beyond belief.

True, although I wouldn't necessarily call it strange. While in the previous write-up, I defended the overall gamer community as not being a bunch of elitists who don't care about anything non-video game, here I'm going to have to turn around and say that old-school gamers, like the majority of GameFAQs membership, are proud of the fact that they loved gaming before it was "cool" and hate anything with mainstream popularity. In fact I already talked about this exact same phenomenon on a single-fanbase level in my Fire Emblem: Awakening write-up. So while it was obvious that DotA 2 was going to get smashed just for being a MOBA, even if it wasn't the one that spawned the hated 2013 champion, it remained to be seen how high a percentage Minecraft of all things would be able to get. And the answer is...not too high, but pretty high. DotA 2 got a better percentage than Fortnite did, at any rate.

It's odd, though; when I was writing these up, I thought that I'd underestimated Minecraft's ability to take advantage of DotA's weakness, and probably had a really bad Oracle because of it. In reality, my Oracle score was pretty good, and I was one of the few who overestimated it!
