The 12 > 5 upset lives! We got two of them this contest, one of which on the very first day. Also, can we put to rest this idea that Batman could win a contest if we included licensed characters? I mean I guess a super rally could work, but every time a games contest happens these licensed games never do anything. Cue the latest example.
Mega Man X was always going to win this match, that was not in doubt, but when Batman's lone accomplishment here is bleeding a minuscule amount of percentage it might be time to reconsider licensed characters' ability to godmode a contest. I'll believe it when I see it, though I'm sure it won't stop people from picking Batman, Spiderman, Superman and the like.
Ctes's Analysis[]
This match was also heavily debated pre-contest. There were people feeling completely safe on both sides. Unlike the last one, the cookie cutter bracket and I were correct here. But considering how debated it was, it sure didn't end up being close. That's pretty rarely the case. Mega Man X has contest history and it isn't exactly great. His character had done well, but characters =/= games. His game and series never escaped round 1 even. People expected more of Batman. The games are great and having Batman alone in the title should be enough in some people's eyes, but it wasn't. We have proof right here that having a big name in title means absolutely nothing, but it didn't really become clear until the Mario Maker match.
Batman doesn't end up looking too bad though, it's a low mid-carder, but not exactly fodder. Mega Man X was just a lot stronger than we expected. It looked legit here, but it didn't become clear until next round just how strong it was. It could make quite the run if placed in the last quarter of the bracket. Chrono Trigger was destroying while this match was on, but this is the real first hint we got towards it being the year of SNES. Although we hadn't quite pieced that together yet. What was however clear, was that in terms of old vs. new, old should always be the favorite. That was my own reason for picking MMX too really. Quoting yoblazer from the first episode of The Show: “in a debatable match of new vs. old, always go with old”. Might not have been the exact words, but it's basically what he said, and he was right too. It started here and comes true about every time.
