Some indie games looked okay this contest. Most did not. FTL was one of the games that ended up looking like a garbage pile. FTL doesn't just look like a garbage pile in polls, either.

Okie dokie.
When I first did my bracket, I actually had Persona 4 Golden winning three matches before deciding to have some faith in GTA5. Losing to Chrono Cross and Golden Sun, while embarrassing, makes sense. But surely GTA5 wouldn't lose to a Vita game even with its built-in anti-votes, right?
Yeah once this poll started I regretted that decision in about 5 seconds. Not only did Persona 4 show none of the weakness one might expect from a Vita title -- this thing was clearly a proxy for the original Persona 4, which is why this and Pokemon HGSS should not have been allowed in this contest -- but Red Dead Redemption pulled off a similar blowout in round 1 of this fourpack. Barring Rockstar hierarchy and SFF (GTA pulling off SFF, ha!), the winner of Persona 4 v Red Dead was going to the divisional finals. That was set in stone after round one.
The discussion when this happened live centered around trying to order Baba Is You, FTL, and Ghost Trick. That was a flawed discussion, because it assumes transitive linearity with Grand Theft Auto when we know 100% that this is not the case. The issue is whether or not the third round match would be close at all, which more or less guarantees GTA can't win, and these round 1 results showed it would be close. That right there meant GTA5 was done.
Side note. Remember back in Bizarro World when Board 8 actually rallied for and rooted for Grand Theft Auto to beat Warcraft in the series contest? It's surreal to think about.
Ctes's Analysis[]
Persona 4 Golden was probably one of the most exciting entrants to the contest in every sense. How would it boost from the huge success of Persona 5? How much would it matter that it’s a remake? On top of that it’s a remake of a game that was released before this decade and thus its eligibility is up for debate? How much would it matter that it’s a Vita exclusive, when the Vita is a good contender for last console you want to be exclusive to? The range of contest strength we believed it could be in was bigger than what most games had, and it had the perfect bracket placement for its run to be as exciting as it gets too.
It was never going to lose in round 1, even if all the things that I mentioned before went against it as much as possible. However, you could make a case for it losing in rounds 2, 3, 4 and 5. For how many games can you make reasonable different brackets that has it losing in so many different rounds. We often see an early match that is important because we know the winner will advance several times. This isn’t even that! It could reasonably lose in any of those rounds and it’s a good reason as to why division 4 was perhaps the most important division in the bracket and the most difficult one to get perfect.
It was hard to determine much of Persona 4’s future in the contest from this match though. Read Dead Redemption delivered a similar blowout. You could argue which losing game is better, but at these percentages that barely matters. Both games also had reasons for potential anti-votes. For P4G that would be the aforementioned status as a remake that a lot fewer people played than the original. FTL is exclusive to PC, which is also something you really don’t want to be exclusive to in a GameFAQs contest. Unlike our Vita exclusive, it’s also not a genre we particularly care for. It’s fine, but it was no surprise to see it end up as badly as it did. I sure hope that there are people appreciating all these fodder games got in, because these are the kind of matches we’re getting as a result.

So we have an enchanced version here I believe. Not even a remake. Persona series is always extremely popular with fans but they don't do well in sales. Persona 5 broke the mold though and it got very good sales so Persona games are finally getting recognition in the West. I am big Shin Megami Tensei fan and Persona started a spin off of the SMT series but now it seems to has surpassed the SMT in popularity and most people don't even know that Persona is a spin off series! I have played P3 and P5 but not P4. I know, I suck. Why? It came on PS 2 and Vita and by the time it came out I didn't had any of these consoles but I thought it would get a port on PS3. But that didn't happened strangely enough. I have even played the Labyrinth games on 3DS too! As for FTL it is another indie game. Great. The Wiki says it is a Space Combat Sim? Huh? It seems to be somewhat popular but as I said above I don't really know indie games so yeah.
So for the match. Well this was never in doubt. Pretty sure P4 beats all indie games here. And it did as expected too. So nothing more to say. All these games going against Indie games you can't really judge their power. And Persona games are weak on this site too strangely enough. I mean in the previous contest Joker couldn't beat even Claire Redfield on 1vs1 and RE2 remake hadn't come out yet. But Joker who is the main character of Persona 5 got in Smash as a playable character which is amazing! And I do believe we even will have a Warriors Persona game spin off. Also I said spin off but Persona games are getting strange spinoffs. We have fighthing games, dance games, action games, hack and slash games... Everything! Wonder why? Plus the winning percentage for P4 is amazing. 77.77% You can't make this up even if you wanted!

Well, this just kind of proves the maxim that it's better to be an old game than a new one. Granted, FTL has always been extremely niche, but the fact of the matter is that arguably the most impressive win of the day came by the remake of an older game. At least I think it was the most impressive? Maybe FTL's so niche that it actually would lose to Ghost Trick?
Either way, the upcoming P4 Golden-RDR match was looking like a 6-point match. It was highly unlikely that merely getting similar numbers to the two of them in Round 1 was enough for GTA V to be on their level, given how bad Baba Is You was expected to have been.
