40% of bracketmakers thought Mario Galaxy 2 would lose to either Return of the Obra Dinn, Stardew Valley, or Destiny. Yeah I don't get it either. Mario Galaxy 2 was one of the most grossly underseeded games in this entire bracket, and I say this with the game having a 4 seed. It should have, bare minimum, been on the 2 line. If you want to skip ahead and look at the LOL x-stats, Galaxy 2 ranked 8th. Seems like the right spot, because this game having a 4 seed was just dumb.
As good as Stardew Valley looked in round one, it looked just as bad in round two. Seeded tournaments have their fair share of blowouts in the first two rounds once all the happy-to-be-here entrants get beat up by the heavy hitters, and Stardew Valley was one of the many mid-majors of sorts to fold once legitimate competition showed up. Beating Destiny was cute. Beating Mario Galaxy 2 was not happening. Thanks for playing, friend. See you next time.
This set up a very interesting match between Witcher 3 and Mario Galaxy 2, and for as amazing as Witcher 3 looked in this contest, we were getting set up to test the Western SFF versus Nintendo theory. Did Witcher 3 look this good because it was the new king of the west, or did it look good because it was just... you know. Really good? We would find out in round 3 in pretty funny fashion!

I think this is one of the rare matches where both games actually look impressive. Super Mario Galaxy 2 underperformed relative to our expectations, which were likely fueled by the absolute blowout it delivered in round 1, but this is still a very solid performance on a game that ends up looking really good. Unfortunately, Super Mario Galaxy 2 got screwed by bracket placement so badly, because The Witcher 3 currently looked to be god tier in contest strength and there was just no way you could hold on to that longshot upset any longer.
Stardew looks really impressive today and it only looks more impressive with each passing round and each passing Witcher 3 match in particular. Super Mario Galaxy 2 is the exact type of game to benefit from this format. It’s not too important that it’s from the Wii’s declining years any longer, because Nintendo are on top again and Super Mario Galaxy 2 is one of the best rated games of the decade, which absolutely matters in a contest like this. Yet Stardew Valley held up to it. We’re in the middle of a round that certainly isn’t kind to indie games. The ones that looked better would look a lot less good after the following round, but not Stardew Valley.
I suppose Stardew Valley just had a really impressive amount of exposure and is exactly what we’re looking for in a game? It got a physical release, which is a dream come true for an indie game, but not just that, it was easily available in tons of places. At least my own observation was that every place had this game for a while, even places with slim selections. It had almost Shovel Knight levels of exposure in that regard. It’s also just really perfect at what it aimed to do. If simulation games aren’t your thing, then you won’t like it of course, but otherwise, you’re likely going to really like this game. It deserves to return to the field again in the future.

So there was a rally for the next match and this affected this match too since the rallied match and this one were going on at the same time. I mean SV got a lot more votes than SMG2 because it is an indie game and they are more easy to rally for them. But still of course SMG 2 would won but it dropped the win percentage by some margin. SV is a really beloved indie game that was made by only 1 guy so yeah. It is like an Animal Crossing game where you can just relax and have fun. No worries, just do whatever you want at your own leisure. As for SMG games they are both Wii exclusives but they both have 97 on Metacritic which is more than amazing. I don't play Mario games but man they have to be extremely good.
So for the match. SMG 2 was winning by more before the rally so yeah it dominated here and even the crew went lower. I guess SMG 2 is a beast game because SV has to be one of the strongest indie games here. So yeah. Once again it is Freaking Mario! Also the prediction percentage seems kinda low for SMG 2 because well it faced really weak opponents and 4 out of 10 people thought it wouldn't even advance to Round 3? Strange.

"Freaking Mario" may be strong, but his games aren't, at least not since SM64. Still...what is that prediction percentage? Galaxy 2 had over 95% prediction percentage in Round 1, yet it barely cracked 60% here. 35% of people thought that either Stardew Valley or Destiny would stop it? I mean, good for them; shows that maybe they have some taste after all. My bracket's pretty much busted since I was counting on this overrated piece of crap going deep because Nintendo Always Wins. It's pretty much toast next round against Witcher 3, which I continue to underestimate for some reason. Oh, right, maybe because the "common wisdom" is that licensed games are garbage?
Yeah that's right I'm going to pull the licensed game card again. We need an all-media character battle desperately. Or even a limited one. We already force people to put game of origin in their nominations, right? So just make them do first game. Though I suspect that due to the "licensed crap" aspect, most of the beloved Kingdom Hearts Disney characters had other games first.
