There was some buzz pre-contest about MGS5 potentially losing this match. It wasn't that Yakuza was some beast or anything, but some people felt that the Metal Gear Solid brand would fall off a cliff in this contest and open the door for an upset.
Yakuza made this an interesting match early by winning the board vote, and in the first couple hours it was even able to pull out the occasional stall and update win. The fun ended there however, and Metal Gear Solid 5 would go on to easily win this match. It wasn't a godslayer blowout by any means, but a win is a win and MGS5 moved on. I have no doubts that the MGS brand is damaged beyond repair anymore, and that it could have gotten upset in a different spot in the bracket, but this was not the fourpack for that to happen. This was one of the weakest fourpacks in the entire contest, so Metal Gear Solid 5 was able to win it by default. I personally loved most of MGS5, but I can completely see why people would anti-vote it.
The funniest part of Metal Gear Solid 5 winning this match is that it set up a rematch (lol) with Dark Souls. Remember this match from 2015? https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/poll/6136-best-game-ever-day-22-round-2-metal-gear-solid-v-vs-dark
The hilarity of this setup was great. Just how far had Metal Gear Solid fallen? We were about to find out.

Yakuza 0 being a game with actual strength was a surprise to many this contest, especially after the characters all looked horrible last contest. We thought The Witness was simply so terrible that anything could blow it out of the contest. True enough, The Witness would end up near the bottom, but this is the match that put it out of contention for the bottom spot, we thought it could have. We fully expected Metal Gear Solid V to be an embarrassment to the once extremely popular franchise after everything that happened with Kojima and Konami back then, and yet the oracle consensus still had it more than 5% above what it got. Yakuza 0 surprised most of us today. Perhaps the characters making it in should have been an indicator that the game is now cared about.
Yakuza 0 ends up looking good and like something we might want to bring back again, but I do think MGSV was a very good game for it look good against, so the x-stats probably overrate it. When the winning game is something so obviously anti-voted, the losing game will look better, it’s dead simple. MGSV is not anti-voted to extreme amounts or it wouldn’t be in round 3, but it definitely is to some extent. Look at the board vote. Yakuza 0 won that, MGSV didn’t start running away with the lead until the end of the freeze. It didn’t look back, but it shows. MGSV was also eliminated in round 1 of board 8’s Game of the Decade of the Year, ZaziGuado’s Game of the Decade board contest using the format of User of the Year. Board 8 hates the game and board 8 is among the biggest Metal Gear Solid fans you’ll find. It was because of board 8’s love for the series that I originally played the series myself, though Snake’s success in the contests helped. The point is that while MGSV is appreciated for its gameplay and name alone, the hardcore fans of the series might very well vote against it, and it might very well be enough to be what caused Yakuza 0 to break 40% today.

I adore the Yakuza series. Read my previous Yakuza 0 match analysis to see why. As for MGS 5 I do believe it is the least liked of the main MGS games. Strangely enough Y0 did amazing in Round 1 but it faced maybe the weakest game on the bracket. So yeah MGS 5 wouldn't lose it at all except with a rally. Or not even with that actually. MGS series is constangly getting weaker with all drama with Komani and the creator of the series.
So for the match. Well MGS 5 won but I do believe it did worse than expected. Even I, I expected at least 60% here but it didn't happen. I guess a combination of Y0 beeing sligtly stronger than expected and MGS 5 beeing slightly weaker did that. Still a win is a win, am I right?

Man Metal Gear has fallen hard. This is a very strong performance by Yakuza 0, showing that it's a game far stronger than its characters, who were nothing short of atrocious in 2018. This would set up a rematch of a somewhat debated 2015 match, except the only debate this time would be just how much more lopsided it would be (the 2015 match wasn't terribly lopsided at all--Dark Souls only won with 55.4%. I'd be surprised if it doesn't exceed that by a full 10%.)
