This match is hilarious to me, but not because of the actual match. A buddy of mine, Raven 2, runs these forum contests every year to determine Board 8's Game of the Year. How cool of a coincidence was it that Kingdom Hearts 3 vs Disco Elysium was a final four match in this contest for 2019, two months before becoming an actual contest match? http://www.bracketmaker.com/tmenu.cfm?1&tid=472920
This match was always going to be an easy win for Kingdom Hearts 3, but it was a bad performance nonetheless. In indie circles, Disco Elysium is an all-timer. In fact, if @KanzarisKelshen is ever around, he'll be happy to get into how influential this game supposedly is and how RPGs are likely to never be played the same way again. I'm not being sarcastic at all, I just know nothing about the game whatsoever and Kanz has a very eloquent way of discussing the things he loves.
To the general gaming public, no one knows what Disco even is, so this match might as well have been Kingdom Hearts versus Not Kingdom Hearts. And Not Kingdom Hearts thoroughly embarrassed Kingdom Hearts here. It isn't often a game scores 68% and can be called a choke artist, but it's true. There is just no way to compare Portal 2 getting 65% on Tomb Raider and KH3 getting 68% here with anything other than Kingdom Hearts being screwed. I shall now bow my head in shame for considering Kingdom Hearts 3, a franchise I despite, had a chance against one of my all-time favorites.

I was pretty excited to see Kingdom Hearts III in the field. It missed the Game of the Year field because Allen has begun basically only looking at Metacritic scores picking games for those things, so it was snubbed for things no one remembers. It’s such a weird decision not to have sales influence at all in my opinion. Luckily, it did not mean it couldn’t make this contest, though I’m sure it has been nominated a lot to get a #6 seed, because the critic scores sure didn’t do it. Sora has gotten a #1 seed too many times, so it’s not new that the site nominates Kingdom Hearts things a lot.
Everyone knows the game released to very mixed opinions. First of all, it came out 6 years after being revealed and they had probably been working on the concept for many years prior to that. We are skeptical of most things Square has released ever since… well, Kingdom Hearts II probably. In the meantime, lots of Kingdom Hearts things had come out. Calling this one III is mostly just a move to promote a console release, because it’s a sequel to Dream Drop Distance, which is a sequel to Coded and that one is a sequel to the one called II. Remaking all the handheld games as 1.5, 2.5 and 2.8 probably didn’t make anyone less confused about the whole thing. I mean, I appreciate the release of all the games on consoles leading up the release of this one, but it was just as much of a mess as the story of the series. They had less Worlds because they were going for bigger Disney names and Disney is the toughest company in the world to deal with when it comes to rights. They also chose not to include Final Fantasy characters on the mostly incorrect assumption that the original Kingdom Hearts characters have been well enough established and liked for them to not need Final Fantasy. Not only is that a bold claim, but it’s also weird to think that increased quality in one thing means they didn’t need something else that people loved. Were they aiming for conservation of quality? They sure did not appear to get that in the heads of most.
It was still a anticipated game named Kingdom Hearts, so it was never going to be complete trash. This site is Square fans at heart even if they’ve done their best to make us change our minds most of this century. It was enough that taking Kingdom Hearts III to the division finals was a decently popular upset pick. It did not quite do well enough to be the favorite going into round 2, but it wasn’t out of the question.
Disco Elysium looks really good and it’s a shame it could not win a match. Actually, what’s a shame is that it’s so far a PC exclusive. It’s being released on current generation consoles later this year. If it had been released on those already we had probably seen it with a higher seed and quite a bit stronger, even though it wouldn’t be extraordinary. It is an RPG after all. I want to play it when it hits PS4 so hopefully I can find the time.

Oh man we have KH 3. When the KH series was first announced and we got details, EVERYONE was saying the same thing. Lol Disney AND FF characters together? Joke game? But when it came out oh man. Oh man. The game was amazing. Nobody expected to become so famous. So of course a sequel came out 3 years after the original. This was in 2005. Then a spin off game. Okay fine. Another spin off. Then another. Then another. There are so many spin offs and remasters that I have lost count. FINALLY after 14 years KH 3 came out but by then nobody cared. And it makes sense. I mean people want always sequels from a series, not spin offs. Sure maybe 1 here and there helps but not as many without main games like the KH series! Out of all KH games KH 2 is considered still the best. I had played it back in the day and even know if you ask me one KH I recommend my first thought is KH 2. That game is amazing. I haven't played KH 3 but a friend of mine played it. When I asked him about it he said there are no FF characters and I thought he was joking. I mean a KH game without FF characters? Yeah sure. This is like having a Smash game without Mario or Link. But guess what. Just GUESS! Yeah NO FF characters in KH 3! Okay seriously? Oh wait it has MOOGLES so all are fine! Yeah a huge dissapointment to put it lightly. As for DE it is an RPG but not one in the traditional sense. I don't know who to describe it, but basically it has NO combat and it has perks and dialogue choices and such but depend on how much you have raised each of the 4 unique skill trees of the protagonist and their sub trees. It is weird, I mean an RPG without combat? But not only works, it works damn well! Plus it even won some GOTY awards! Yeah you heard me correctly! And the game is barely 6 months old!
So for the match. No matter how people are dissapointed by KH3 it wouldn't lose to DE because even though it is popular and good I don't think it has a huge fanbase or something. If there was a strong indie game here then I do believe it would lose. Yeah KH sucks now. Also the KH series has the more convoluted story ever, maybe tied with the MGS franchise. So it barely scored a doubling and that is decent. Probably.

The good news is that Kingdom Hearts III got the doubling. The bad news is, it only barely got 68% against a PC-exclusive (with ports to other consoles planned for 2020, but still, currently a PC exclusive) indie game that is nominally an RPG, but contains no combat and instead progresses through skill checks and dialogue trees. Which kind of sounds more like a visual novel to me! So, VN/RPG hybrid, that's fine I guess, but it doesn't sound like the type of thing that should have the strength to get almost 32% on a big name Square Enix series. They can't do anything right these days, can they? Of course, Kingdom Hearts isn't just Square Enix, and its other parent company is known for being one of the most well-oiled machines in the world. Maybe it'd be better for us all if they just bought up the video game/manga giant (yes, Square does more than just video games).
Apparently the title "Disco Elysium" was chosen for multiple meanings, including "disco" being Latin for "I learn". I am certainly learning as a result of this project.
