A game made by Nintendo for the SNES, Earthbound is actually Mother 2. It's an RPG based on current times. The game has zombies, but they're presented in a very lighthearted manner... making sure you don't see the sheer HORROR of the end of the game coming.
Nintendo doesn't want to re-release the game on American shores at all. Mostly due to hundreds of references that would have to be changed in order to avoid lawsuits, but partly due to the fact that Nintendo's original advertising campaign did as much as possible to discourage your purchase of it. Some people have such an unhealthy obsession with the game that they made large-scale campaigns to try and get the game re-released on Virtual Console.
