Final Fantasy VII is a 1997 role playing game developed and published by Square (now Square Enix) for the Sony PlayStation. It has been re-released for Microsoft Windows on May 31st 1998, iOS on August 19th 2015 and PlayStation 4 on December 5th 2015.

It is generally considered to be one of the most overrated games on Board 8. As the first RPG with a heavy focus on graphics, and first exposure to an RPG of many people, the game's fan base is usually derided in modern times for looking at it with "nostalgia goggles" thick enough that many would choose it as the best game ever made. As such, it was the winner of the Spring 2004 Contest after defeating Chrono Trigger in the final match, and the runner-up of the Spring 2009 Contest after being bested by Ocarina of Time.

Final Fantasy VII hosts two members of the Noble Nine, Cloud and Sephiroth. They held so much power over the contest that the term Clinkeroth was named for them in mind. In fact, Cloud actually defeated Link in the Summer 2003 Contest. Other characters from the game routinely appear in character contests, such as Vincent, Tifa, Aeris, Cid, Zack, Barret, and even regular enemies like Midgar Zolom. Vincent is so powerful that he was considered the most likely character to break the Noble Nine's 1-on-1 winning streak until this occured in 2010 without his involvement, while Midgar Zolom drew a match against Cloud in his only appearance and failed to break 9000 votes.

Final Fantasy VII's power has begun to wane a little in recent years as a whole, with Cloud and Sephiroth both being defeated by Squirtle and Mewtwo/Draven respectively in the Summer 2013 Contest. FF7 was defeated by a rally-boosted Super Smash Bros. Melee in the Fall 2015 Contest, the same year which news about a remake of the game broke, as well as Cloud's inclusion in Super Smash Bros. For 3DS/Wii U. Time will tell if these new developments will increase FF7's power again in future contests.
