Ryu

For the similarly-named ninja, see Ryu Hayabusa.

Ryu is the undisputed icon of the fighting game genre. He is the main character of the Street Fighter series and was one of the original 8 World Warriors of Street Fighter II. There's some kind of deep backstory involving him, but all you really need to know is down-to-forward punch.

Ryu was also the inspiration for Heroic Mario's alt Tatsumaki Senpakyuu.

In Contest terms, Ryu has earned the title of Mr. Consistency. Due to his icon status, how he always looks great in match pics, and the fact that he's impossible to anti-vote, Ryu has never turned in a bad Contest performance, with the possible exception of his beatdown at the hands of Bowser in 2005. Fortunately for Ryu, he was able to avenge that embarrassment and then some by owning Bowser convincingly in 2007. L-Block halted Ryu's performance in 2008, but he overcame this by reaching the division finals in 2010. After being trampled by the r/LoL hostile takeover in 2013, Ryu came back for another division final in 2018.

Ryu's long contest history has made him face seven of the Noble Nine (exceptions being Link and Mario) - Samus in 2002 and 2007, Snake in 2003, Sonic in 2004, Mega Man in 2006 and 2007, Crono in 2008, Cloud in 2007 and 2010, and Sephiroth in 2018. Except for his 2010 match against Cloud, Ryu was able to put up at least 40% in all of his Noble Nine face-offs.
