-I have decided to extend my game playing project to SNES games as well.

-Board 8ers will be nominating SNES games they would like me to play.

-I will then record myself playing through each and every game and post the videos on youtube.

Let me just start by saying, even though this game is not my favorite SNES game, it is still an amazing game to an amazing trilogy on the SNES. This game takes your usual platformer aspect, speeds it up, and throws in some Battletoads esque difficulty. What I mean by that is unfair difficulty as in dying just because you didn't know something was coming up, but this game also overloads you on extra lives to balance it out.

Anyway, The first Donkey Kong Country game was pretty revolutionary for it's time I'd say. Yes I know we had other challenging platformers and other fast paced ones, but this one gave us a heavy mix of both worlds to create a product that is still very fun today. Now, I know most people think the 2nd game is better, and some may even feel that makes the first game not worth playing, but let me just say that's like arguing which is better between Mega Man 2 and 3. Regardless of which you think is better, you most likely still either enjoy both or dislike both, and one being better than the other doesn't take away the enjoyment of the other. With that said...let's get on with the game.

The graphics in this game are great for their time. Those of us long time gamers that were around for the start of the SNES will more than likely recall how good Super Mario World looked when it first came out. Donkey Kong Country pushes the limits on the SNES even more. Yes I know it isn't the most impressive graphics wise today, but believe me back then it was special.

The music is also something done very well. Again I can't say it has any of the best video game themes by todays standards(though the 2nd game does) but it's still very good even now. Anyone playing, or watching, this game can easily tell that the music fits every stage very well, and not just the stages but the type of characters too. Back then Donkey Kong and pals didn't really have a set type of music that related to them, but today we do have defining theme types for them and this game is what started it all.

The difficulty, as mentioned, is in some aspects like Battletoads. It's that trial and error difficulty that kind of annoys you but not enough to make it so the game isn't fun. This game also incorporates regular platforming difficulty that isn't trial and error which is, as mentioned,a nice mix. Also, they give you plenty of opportunities to get extra lives so you don't run out, and there are even save points throughout the game.

The gameplay in this game is epic. As I've said, even by todays standards this is a really fun game. Rare certainly did a good job with not only this game but the series in general. We all know platformers by now so I don't need to explain, but it does add in a few extra elements. Not only do you use Donkey Kong/Diddy Kong, but there are a variety of other animals you'll find along the way to help you on your adventure and each of them have various abilities that change the game play in one way or another.

Overall, I do like the 2nd game in this series the best, but I still have much love for the first game. I very much enjoyed playing through this game, and being that I hadn't played it in so long it was a nice trip down memory lane. I'd highly recommend this game to fans of platformers that like good music and enjoy a challenge without it being overly complicated.

My first completed SNES games for this project, and probably the perfect game to start with. While it may not be my favorite SNES game, Super Mario World has a charm all of it's own, and I honestly don't think the System could have started with a better game.

Now I know some people may not like this, but I prefer this game to Super Mario Bros. 3. I just feel like Super Mario World took everything 3 had and improved upon it. That's not to say Super Mario Bros. 3 isn't still a great game, it is and it will never wear due to age, but Super Mario World just tops it in every way for me.

Getting my SNES way back when I was 7 years old on Christmas Day and playing this game was one of the fondest childhood memories I have. This was of course back when you bought the system you actually got everything you needed AND an amazing game to boot. Those days are sadly long gone unless you want to wait at least a year after the system has been made for a bundle giveaway.

Super Mario World, to some, is still the greatest Mario game ever. You'll find various games that could compete for best Mario game spot, and each has a rightful claim to it. My personal view is that, while this isn't the best Mario game, this was the pinnacle of Mario games. Back then you only had 2 real choices, SNES or Genesis. By the time Super Mario 64 hit, gamers had 3 choices and less people probably played it than World. But anyway.....enough about that and on with this game itself.

Honestly, I really don't need to say much about this game. I highly doubt there are many gamers who don't know Super Mario World unless you were born after the SNES years. The music is just awesome. The graphics for it's time are amazing. The gameplay, even by todays standards, is extremely well done, and as far as fun factor.....well....It's around 18 years later, I've beat this game numerous times, and I still LOVED going through it once more. In fact, I could play through it again tomorrow and still have fun because it's that good of a game.

One key feature I find in this game that I feel almost every other Mario game is lacking was the world map. Unlike games like Super Mario Bros 3 or New Super Mario Bros, the world map is just 1 huge thing and there are various paths you can take even hidden ones. I wish so much that they'd go back to that style of Mario game.

Added to that, the level design is just perfect. Beautiful vivid colors, and plenty of variety even when dealing with the same koopa troopas so many times.

So many new things added to this game, from Yoshi to being able to hold an additional item, not to mention the Super Cape was an awesome improvement over the Racoon. (Though I do still miss the Tanooki and Hammer Bros suit).

This game is really just packed full of so much. The Koopa kids returning and actually having a few different types of battles with you. The bonus stage after collecting 100 stars. The hidden Star Road and even more hidden Special zone for more difficult challenges. A great Bowser battle. It's really just way too much to talk about.

Overall, you have to experience it for yourself. Even if you're already played through it, it's worth another play through. This game was and is still epic and insanely fun. I honestly don't think I'll ever get tired of it, and if they made a new Mario game like this today you can bet I would be standing outside the Game Stop waiting for it to open just to play it as soon as possible.
