Tales of... is an RPG series made by Namco whose most popular entry is Tales of Symphonia. ...which isn't even that popular, and yet the rabid fanbase of this series continues pushing some of the weakest characters in recorded history into the GameFAQs Summer Contests. It's crazy!
The Tales series was the first JRPG series to play more like a fighting game, with active battles where you get a lot of control over your character and try to do hits while avoiding damage, and you also get some special moves. The series has also used limited voice acting since the very beginning, pushing the envelope of what should've been possible on the Super Famicom with Tales of Phantasia. Most of the team would then quit and make Star Ocean, which has about the same kind of battle system. Neither game would reach American shores until well after the Nintendo 64 era was over.
Common themes in the series involve making men that look like women, box puzzles, fetch quests to artificially increase the game time, and what TVTropes refers to as a Cliché Storm.
Total Win-Loss Record in Character Battles: 1-15
The one person who gave up a win? Albert Wesker. That's not happening again.
With Tales Studio in such horrible condition, the day may not be far off when one-and-done Tales characters stop showing up in the contest entirely. Of course, characters from Tales of Symphonia will never go away as long as nominations are used to generate contest brackets.
